It’s just a game but …

I like game shows for two reasons, to try and answer the questions and to see the behavior of the players.

Some of the answers are hard (for me) to believe.

What war followed the Battle of Bunker Hill?
Answer: World War II

Which president authorized the Lewis and Clark expedition?
Answer: Nixon

Where is the Eiffel Tower located?
Answer: Texas

Name the City where they hold the Rose Bowl?
Answer: California

In what century did the Civil War occur?
Answer: 20th

What will you do with the $10,000 if you win?

I have been to all the Disney parks except Hong Kong so I’m going there business class – with after tax proceeds of $10,000‼️

I’m a big fan of Lord of the Rings so I’m going to take my entire family to New Zealand

I’m on a quest to visit every major league ball park, so I guess I’ll finish that.

I’m getting season tickets in good seats.

I’m waiting for the person who says, I am making a payment on my student loans, I’ll pay off my credit card or I think I will make a contribution to an IRA.

  1. I remember laughing when watching “Jaywalking” with Jay Leno at the absurd answers he got from random people on the street. I often wondered whether they were just giving facetious answers to get a laugh, or were they really that poorly informed.

As for gameshows, the contestants are often asked what they would do if they won a cash prize. Ditto for buyers of lottery tickets. The one unanimous theme they all seem to share is that they will spend it, maybe on themselves, maybe on a loved one, but always spend. My dream is that one day, one of them will say something like: “I will check with my CPA to see whether I owe any taxes on the winnings to the feds and state, pay off or pay down my non-mortgage debt, help out a family member or friend in need, and if any is left over, put all of it into a stock index fund.” Probably would not get much of an ovation from the audience, but I’d clap!
