Bernie Sanders fallacy

I know there is a fallacy here, but I’m not sure which one. Is there an absurd fallacy?

Of course, Social Security taxes are based on salaries, not net worth, so using billionaires in this context is just a red herring, extreme left rhetoric. Billionaires don’t actually earn a billion a year from their pay.

More important is that what Sanders wants is to change the very structure of Social Security and place it more under political control and within federal budget spending. That was never the intent.

Sanders argument could be applied to anyone who earns more than the taxable wage base each year – currently $168,600, which by the way is more than twice the National median household income.

Nobody pays taxes on more than that amount and nobody – not even billionaires- receives a benefit based on more than that amount.

It is and has been the responsibility of Congress to manage the program as designed which was to be self-funded via payroll taxes and benefits under a formula reflecting taxable earnings.

Congress has failed to meet its responsibilities so people like Sanders find ways to distract us under the false guise of fairness.

What is truly unfair is Congress not doing its job.

Minor adjustments to the taxable wage base and the tax rate as necessary and fully funding improved benefits on a consistent basis would have kept the program fully solvent.

The Trustees have stated this every year for decades and their urging to take action has been ignored for decades.

  1. Bernie is a self-proclaimed socialist which is all one needs to know. If there were pills for stupid I am not sure Bernie could take enough of them to actually work.

  2. Bernie uses all opportunities to show his point of view of the world. It’s a warped view but I guess his constituents are okay with it.
His comments about Social Security are good though in the context of keeping it in the consciousness of the people, at least the people who read his comments.
