How can America ever be truly great unless …

  • We assure all citizens have the means to obtain and pay for health care using a single more efficient system
  • Social Security is made solvent on a permanent basis while raising benefits for the lowest income Americans
  • Our immigration laws and enforcement are designed to obtain the best economic outcomes for the Country while demonstrating a level of compassion to those in need and deserving
  • As a nation we move prudently toward improving our environment
  • We provide aid to other peoples and nations in their time of crisis
  • We maintain the strongest military deterrent possible
  • We provide targeted safety net programs to those in need with the objective of raising people above that need
  • We learn to live within our means rather than passing immense debt to future generations
  • We demand the highest level of integrity, civility and honesty from those we elect to lead us
  • We reject all forms of extremism
  • Recognize the global world we live in and reject nationalism and isolationist views
  • Each citizen arms themselves with facts and resists propaganda when developing an opinion

Achieving greatness requires hard work. Maintaining it is even harder

  1. Interesting and thoughtful list–would be nice to see many of the proposals implemented.

Would agree with James 2 and his analysis.

Things though would get tricky. Would terrorism include aborting an unborn fetus? That would provoke some discussion.

Living within our means? Heck, the average person does not do that so why should the government?

  2. “And when I said, you know, Why can’t we allow people to come in from nice countries, I’m trying to be nice,” Mr. Trump said at the dinner, to chuckles from the crowd. “Nice countries, you know like Denmark, Switzerland? Do we have any people coming in from Denmark? How about Switzerland? How about Norway?”

He continued, “And you know, they took that as a very terrible comment, but I felt it was fine.”

  3. Well, the innovation and willingness is still intact in our capitalistic economy. It’s the political interference that is holding us back. If only members of our political establishment in the US Congress and the Presidency can restore reasonableness and compromise in their actions, can the US economy progress. And avoid cataclsimic war!

    1. The political class does get in its own way most of the time. I don’t accept that if they didn’t disagree with each other things would be smooth sailing. We have an economy with full employment but still run deficits in the trillions. Why is that? That said, there is innovation and growth in the private sector and it is not recognized as much as it should be.

We have to come to terms with what is necessary first and then what may be doable but is going to be affordable. For example, can we afford to garrison troops around the world and maintain a navy that controls the 7 seas. If that is to be done then something else gets dropped off the wish list.

  4. Excellent list of possibilities … unfortunately very little will be achieved in ours and our children’s lifetime. Self greed, misinformation and our political establishments will prevent us from being truly great. Someone once said “remember today – because this day will be looked back as ‘better’ than the day we look back”.
