Clear thinking

The profit margins at grocery stores are 1 to 3% meaning in the end if you spend a dollar, the store nets between one and three cents. What does that tell you about higher profits?

Starbucks net profit margin is about 9%, Apple net profit margin 26%, Coca-Cola net profit margin 23%

Here’s some clear thinking. The easy way to solve that is don’t carry insurance. Insurance, any insurance, only works if most people have less in claims than they pay in premiums, many with no claims.

Umm, that doesn’t seem to work

I suppose you could say give me back my premiums if I don’t have a claim and I will give you back the amount you pay in claims on my behalf.

No consequences here

  1. Fundamentally insurance is not an investment, it is a transfer of risk. You pay the premium to transfer a risk to the insurance company and you should hope that the cost is a complete waste of money. Because if you are lucky you never have to make a claim because nothing bad ever happens. But if something bad did happen you were covered. So you shifted the risk from your shoulders to an insurance company’s pocketbook. They get paid to take the risk, knowing that most people will not have a claim but they will be responsible financially for those few who do have something bad happen and it will result in a big expense for the insurer. People complain that they pay for years and never get anything from it. And I say, you were fortunate.

    1. I agree, I hope never to use insurance, although unfortunately unrealistic. I think the real transfer of risk is to the policyholders more than the ins company.

      1. be careful–thinking like that today can get you in hot water–definitely not politically correct but shows lots of common sense–I suspect to become a citizen a test covering those areas is what folks take.
