ENDless summer

I find Labor Day the most depressing time of the year. Another summer is gone. Endless summers become less endless every year.

The grandchildren are heading back to school. Walking the beach is a bit lonely and my quest for sea glass goes unfulfilled for another year.

On the Friday before Labor Day the beaches are filled with families with the pre-school age children and some of us oldsters.

On Monday the beaches are empty, the lifeguard stand is no longer occupied. Nobody is watching for sharks. We stopped going to the beach on Labor Day, it’s too depressing.

If you tried to leave Cape Cod on Monday, you could read War and Peace while waiting in traffic.

I hope you enjoyed your summer.

Oh well, we have pumpkin spice everything to look forward to.

  1. the end of another summer–the end of an annual 3-weeks during the summer at Cape Cod–the end of free flowing traffic in my metro area–the joy of sitting on my porch and watching children of all ages walk up the hill to the various schools and then late in the afternoon coming down but seemingly much happier than during the morning trek.

if you go on line to the Washington Post Jonathan Clements has a poignant piece in the Op-Ed section–let’s pray he has more summers than he anticipates–miracles do happen

  2. Worst part about Labor Day is I now have to start planning on closing my pool! To me having the cover on is the start of winter (yep even in late September).

  3. It’s been a nice summer although interestingly down here the grandkids went back to school the beginning of August. We’re already going to cross country meets and fall league softball games. Labor Day is just a break in the action.
