What happens at a Trump rally

This is political. This is important.

If you read this, I urge you to read the entire article on HUFFPOST by Jen Golbeck, a professor at the University of Maryland where she studies extremism, social media, malicious online behavior, and artificial intelligence.

This is from her article describing her experiences visiting Trump rallies. What she concludes is terrifying.

Conspiracy theories and misinformation are threaded through every conversation I have:

The assassination attempt was an inside job.

Obama is still running the government.

People in the country illegally are being given vast sums of money, benefits, houses and free education.

Crime is at an all-time high.

Antifa has burned major American cities to the ground.

There is a globalist cabal in control of everything.

I frequently ask if Trump lost the 2020 election and, except for one individual, the response is unanimous, immediate and strong: The election was stolen. The single hold out just shrugged, which I took as, “Who knows?”

The conversations I’ve had over the last three months have made it clear to me that there is a large, unified movement committed to the destruction of American democracy. This campaign claims to want to save our country — to make it great again — but it is working to do exactly the opposite. These rally goers cheerfully and earnestly call themselves “patriots,” but true patriotism is nothing like the hateful, authoritarian, anti-institutional platform they support, and I believe many of these people do not grasp this — or how they are being used.

“How they are being used“ that is the saddest part of all that is happening…and we know this is not the first time in history this has been the case. We do know it has not turned out well anytime in the past.

No one I talk to believes there will be a peaceful transfer of power if Trump loses the election in November. Lots of people mention “civil war(though no one volunteers to fight it), “civil unrest,” or “the end of America as we know it” and “the fall of the American empire.” They, like many people across the political spectrum, see this election as determining whether America survives.

The people I chat with drop slurs into our conversations, often with the glee of teens testing their parents’ boundaries. Since Kamala Harris has become the Democratic nominee for president, the men I interview at every event tell me that she got to where she is “on her knees.” They shift from foot to foot as they say it to me, knowing it’s offensive, and wait for my reaction. As someone who has endured a career full of misogyny and sexual harassment, I feel waves of disgust and anger when I hear these comments, but I just blink, remain blank-faced, and wait for them to continue.

The discussions are infused with dehumanizing language. Immigrants are a common target for their attacks and, as someone married to one, I sometimes physically bite my tongue to keep from responding. As the attendees bemoan the alleged “border invasion,” they simultaneously (and disingenuously) claim that they would welcome these people if they came to this country “the right way.”

They aren’t alone. While the people I’ve spoken with are more extreme in their beliefs than your average Republican, the polls tell us that many others have been duped into believing that Trump-style fascism is worth accepting if it can deliver a return to “better days.” This is terrifying.

    1. Fringe on both sides indeed Sanders, Warren on the left for example, but we’ve never seen what has happened to the Republican side, at least in my 80 years. I fancy myself conservative, but not extreme. The Trump movement is more akin to 1930s Europe than anything rational.

      1. What seems new, at least to me, is how quickly the fringe on the right seemed to have completely taken over the Republican Party. And just like the members of the Woke Left, they do not tolerate dissent. I find it more informative to get my news from a variety of sources, Left, Right and Center. I too have always considered myself conservative, but I told my sons years ago as they neared the age to vote that “If I must choose between a dishonest conservative Republican and an honest Liberal, I’d vote for the Liberal every time.

  1. The writer in this article from the Huff Post has done a good job slandering Trump and his supporters.  I’m sure this is just one of the many articles that will be coming out in order to sway those who don’t realize that our country is under attack by far left socialists/and yes, globalists/and communists.  The truth: Trump is not a fascist. He knows that America is in trouble, and he is not afraid to speak about it or to stand and fight and to even risk his life to defend it.  Nor or we, his supporters.

I would suggest you don’t take this writer’s viewpoint seriously and instead, go to a rally and see for yourself that most of what this writer describes is a small fraction of those attending the event (as in any event) and many of them are vendors with who knows what kind of political view.  I live in a community that is majority Republican (many of us have gone to a Trump rally) and I can tell you first hand that we are not fascist or socialist radicals and we don’t burn down buildings or cars or block roads or physically attack (or try to assassinate) those who don’t agree with us.  Most of us believe in the God of the Bible.  We stand firm for law and order.  We believe in loving our families and treating others kindly.  That said, we believe that our nation is in great danger from those who would destroy our Constitution and our freedoms.

When I read this article, I could see that the author wanted to instill great fear in the reader regarding who Republicans are and who Trump is.  If I were you, I would trash the article and I would make sure that the man that is willing to die for his country is probably the man that should be, and hopefully will be, our next President.

    1. Have you read TrumpSocial? Have you listened to what Trump says and does? Do you think Trump follows God and Bible? A man of integrity and ethics? Who is taking your freedoms? What freedoms are you referring to? Trump is doing what was done in the 1930s in Europe, but you are blind to his tactics.

      1. Exactly my take as well. Trump is literally everything Christians stand against. And his cultists remind me of the same people they followed televangelists in the 80s and sent them all their money.

  2. Huffpost is a Democratic propaganda site. You can’t deny it! I have discounted anything published on this site. It is skewed against Republicans in general and dead set nagative against Trump.

I am a registered independent. I think for myself.

    1. I hope you do think for yourself using credible information, but if you are a Trump supported based on his rhetoric, claims and hate, you aren’t thinking clearly.

Ignore me, just listen to him and see how he acts. Visit his TruthSocial and see what is said and ask yourself if that is the way you behave, is that how you raised children to behave?

First, she is professor specializing in studying these movements. What she wrote is 100% consistent with what is daily posted on TruthSocial and the feedback I get from Trump supporters on Facebook. That is why I give it credibility. The fact so many Americans cannot see what is happening is truly frightening.

It’s not about Dem vs Rep or left or right, it is about one individual who has convinced millions to drink his kool-aide based on lies, (knowingly repeated) misinformation and false and irresponsible promises.

      1. Mr Quinn, you are a thoughtful man. I respect your thinking. I don’t involve myself in politics or party affiliation. But most so called news sites ( not all) have long since evolved into opinion based upon the editors persuasion, whatever that may be. I like to read credible historical non-fiction to develop a broader perspective on current events.

      2. That’s why I go to the source and attempt to verify an issue from at least three sources and when possible the root source and data. I also take survey results with a grain of salt as they are questionably reliable much of the time.

      3. So sad to see all how the MAGA cultists have all been conditioned to immediately dismiss any information that conflicts with their pre-conceived view, even when the info is coming directly from Trump. They just don’t understand your point at all about listening to what Trump himself is saying.

  3. What a liberal professor concludes as terrifying is not surprising. She went with a preconceived mind and nothing was or is going to change it.
Brother Quinn, are you going to spend the rest of the year pounding the table for the Dems and the far left or are you going to occasionally have a sensible topic? Just say yes or no so I can save time by avoiding this blog.

    1. I don’t give a hoot for Democrats. I never voted for one in my life. I look at Trumps TruthSocial every day and the posts by his followers are totally consistent with her observations. I hope you trad her full article.

      1. that is the genius of Trump. He is so incoherent and just constantly making stuff up, so his followers don’t even know what he is actually saying. So they just project whatever they want onto him, even if it if contradicts with what he has said or done. Then they jump through hoops to justify it. They hate the national debt but he makes it worse. They hate inflation but his policies will make it worse. They love the constitution but he threatens to suspend it. They profess to love the military even though Trump disdains them. They love Reagan even though Trump represents the exact opposite, wanting to destroy NATO and fawning over autocrats like Putin.

  4. Everything in this article rings true and matches my own personal experience with family members and colleagues who have unfortunately fallen into this cult. This time is so much worse though compared to 2016 and 2020. All the adults are gone. I really feel like it might be the end of Trump, though I suspect Elon is the natural successor at this point. I am attaching a similar article that I found insightful about what happened to the Republican Party of Reagan and Bush. https://www.richardhanania.com/p/the-rise-of-the-dale-gribble-voter
