Veterans Day

There are veterans, real veterans who truly sacrificed, who risked everything for their country and for all of us, including those who made military service their career.

They deserve our respect and appreciation.

And then there are veterans like me who spent four years in the National Guard and 22 months on active duty in Alabama first as a truck driver and then as a battalion personnel sergeant.

That’s a very different, very unequal kind of veteran.

  1. my guess is that, like me, you went where you were ordered. I was never in combat, either. But it isn’t called “combat day”, but veteran’s day. It isn’t national service day, either.

Memorial Day is set aside as a unique and separate remembrance.

  2. I somewhat disagree with the previous comment. The servicemen who volunteered and served in combat deserve the most credit and should received favored treatment benefits by the Veterans Administration. I served in a non-combat role in the states and in Vietnam. I was never exposed to direct combat.

    1. Most sources I’ve seen say only about ten percent of the military actually see combat, and I agree, those who do deserve preferred treatment.

  3. You deserve the same respect as any other veteran. You took that oath to serve and protect this country.
