How did you know it was time to retire? How will you know?

For many folks, this is purely a financial question. They hand in their notice when their portfolio hits a target size or when their likely retirement income surpasses what they think they need.

But what about you, HumbleDollar readers? Was the realization it’s time to retire about more than just money? For those still in the workforce, what will be the signal that it’s time to quit—and will that signal be solely financial or will other factors play a role?

  1. The discussion/comments are very good. I’m a few years away from seriously thinking about retirement. I hope the decision to retire is mine – and not something I have to do for health reasons.

  2. I am retiring from my chosen career at age 77. It was less a money decision and more of wanting to better invest the time and energy in preserving my health and sharing time with my wife and friends. The time came where I wanted to reprioritize my life activities. That was my bottom line motivation.

  3. you (others) need to define “retire” – do you mean stop working for income or something else?

there are many definitions. Some define it as starting benefits, ever if still working for income inless than full time employment in a career role.
