The thing is I and many other people have been writing about this for ten years. The trustees have been warning Congress for even longer.
MUSK has nothing to do with discovering anything.
Trump did not address it in his first term. Biden didn’t address it during his time in office and Trump didn’t mention the gravity of both SS and Medicare during his campaign other than he will protect SS.
So far this time as president he has not made any effort to address the problem other than to make it worse by suggesting tax-free SS and deporting working illegal immigrants paying FICA taxes.
Those are the facts, the truth and nothing but the truth. ‼️

Illegal immigrants use fake SS numbers which are readily accepted by their American employers. This group paid an estimated $25.7 billion in Social Security taxes in 2022, according to a recent analysis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy.
Whatever the amount is, it helps fund SS and Medicare by people who can’t collect benefits.

Has any President said anything about SS, Medicare and Medicaid in the past 25 years? Well, GW Bush wanted to put it in the market but that did not fly. Obama got more people on medicaid with Obamacare. But as far as Social Security itself it had been crickets.
Steny Hoyer has a good plan ready to go through the process if Congress ever gets serious about its duties. Maybe that’s where the process should begin rather than waiting for a President to direct the proceedings.

You are right, it has basically been ignored for 30 years. The two public trustee positions have not even been filled.
It is the presidents job to rally the Congress to address a problem, to push the issue, to talk to Americans, to establish a commission or whatever to get the job done.
All recent presidents have failed to do anything. Trump now has his second chance and all we get is glib words about protecting it as the clock is ticking.
