Shouldn’t every President be a role model for ethical behavior to the maximum extent humanly possible?

I strongly dislike Donald Trump.

Wait‼️ This isn’t about taxes, tariffs, immigrants, Musk or even about mocking laws.

It is about personal behavior, civility, humanity, common courtesy.

I follow Trump closely. I read what he posts on social media, listen to what he says and read the e-mails he sends via the White House.

I fact check his claims.

His outrageous behavior, bullying and name calling is undesirable in anyone, but should be totally unacceptable for our President.

What is most amazing is the support he receives from the Christian conservative right and from people who say he stands for their values.

Mr Trump’s behavior should be unacceptable to these people, but it isn’t … yet.

Many religions across the world share a core set of virtues that are considered fundamental to leading a good and ethical life. Some common virtues found in most religions include:

Compassion and Kindness: Treating others with empathy, understanding, and a desire to alleviate their suffering.

Justice and Fairness: Upholding what is right and equitable in interactions with others and within society.

Honesty and Truthfulness: Being sincere and truthful in words and actions, avoiding deception and misrepresentation. Integrity is highly valued in most faiths.

Love and Charity: Showing selfless care and concern for others, often extending beyond immediate connections to encompass all of humanity.

Humility: Recognizing one’s limitations and avoiding arrogance or pride.

Patience and Tolerance: Bearing difficulties with fortitude and showing acceptance and understanding towards others.

Respect for Life: Valuing and protecting the sanctity of life, which can extend to all living beings in some traditions.

Self-Control and Temperance: Practicing moderation in desires and actions, avoiding excess and indulgence.

Faith and Hope: Trusting in a higher power or a spiritual path and maintaining a positive outlook, even in challenging times.

Wisdom and Knowledge: Seeking understanding and insight into the nature of reality and the principles that guide ethical living.

Now, go down this list and (honestly) assess how Mr Trump’s behavior and actions match up.

  1. Donald Trump has never been a role model to anyone, not even his own children. That whole family is as disgusting as the Kardashians… Anyone who would have voted for this twit of a man is a “sheep”.. He has lied his way into the presidency.. and now this great country is doomed.. He has never been for the people.. but for himself and his rich friends.. I for one am worried about this great country.. it has become the laughing stock of the world.. all due to Trump

  2. Couple of thoughts on the topic. Trump has character flaws in spades. No question. In the past, the President was given a pass by the press and there was no social media. That creates the idea of role model you speak of. Their peccadillos and foibles were not covered like today. That’s how we got Camelot during the JFK administration and FDR wasn’t photographed with his physical limitations. Nobody heard their fowl language. All this came out later. That’s no excuse for Trump but no hero worship for the rest of the crowd in my book. Second thought is the virtues you list in religions are contained in the religions but the followers have difficulty keeping up.

  3. All good points. I agree totally. Hard to pick a favorite, but…

“Respect for Life: Valuing and protecting the sanctity of life, which can extend to all living beings in some traditions.”

Trump’s admiration for dictators, especially for their absolute power through fear because of their ability to “disappear” opponents. I have always believed Trump wants that ultimate power for himself, as if that would make him god-like.

IMHO, Ashli Babbitt’s blood is on his hands, and his attempt to blame the security guard, who was doing his job, makes him even more deplorable.

My personal anguish is that I have family that I love who strongly support him.

Security guard had a “history” which you can Google. The young woman had no weapon of any type–was in the presence of both Capitol police and civilians–if she was a member of a minority group her death would not be so casual–we would hear over and over again; “say her name”.

Let me know if she was armed and what danger she presented. We seem to have different strokes for different folks which for my lifetime we have been trying to rid ourselves of.

As far as your family you might relate to us what they see as positive in Mr. Trump. Too often the haters of Trump project an air of superiority and consider any supporter as less than bright bordering on racism and bigotry.

      1. You made me look.

“What are you doing? Take back the Senate! You’ve got guns. Use them,” Lindsey Graham told Capitol police…

“We give you guns for a reason,” he said. “Use them.”

Not that I have much use for Lindsey Graham.

FWIW, Ashli Babbitt had a ‘Para Force’ folding knife in her pocket. Did Michael Byrd see that? Did he see a gun? No. If he waited to see a gun, it likely would have been too late. He saw what I saw on the video, barricaded wooden doors with glass uppers. Rioters (unknown numbers) breaking through the glass. He ordered them to stop, and they did not. His life, and others, were in danger. I hope I would have done the same thing, in his place, AND he was exonerated from any wrongdoing in Babbitt’s death by an internal use-of-force probe.

Made me look; I saw a video I hadn’t seen before, showing Capitol police on the other side of the door, near the rioters, with other officers in riot gear responding. Byrd was not aware of these, all he saw was rioters breaking in.

Also saw a compilation of negative reports on his 28 year career. Irrelevant. He was still an officer in good standing.

Donald Trump is the villain here. His lies and actions are directly responsible for Ashli Babbitt’s death.

The members of my family who support Trump are almost exclusively the religious ones (I am not). Hard to say about the reasons, after the first few disagreements, we simply don’t discuss him. Time will tell.

so she had a pocket knife in her pocket–what danger did she present–sounds like Kent Univ. back in the day–and capitol police were, as you say close by, in fact really close –so Byrd discharges his gun and someone (the only person that day) died–as I said think of her name being Tamika Babbitt.

What Graham was advocating is just fine if you have armed individuals threatening the lives of folks–funny that only one cop felt the need to shoot among all the armed personnel right there– and a unarmed woman as a pocket knife in her pocket doesn’t constitute shooting someone as far as I know–and obviously he did not know of that pocket knife.

Appreciate your honest look-see of the issue.

“U.S. Representative Markwayne Mullin, a witness to Babbitt’s attempted breach, said that Byrd “didn’t have a choice” but to shoot, and that his action “saved people’s lives”.

        One man’s opinion?

“…United States Department of Justice investigated Babbitt’s death and made a determination that the shooting was “lawful and within Department policy”. Upon clearing Byrd, USCP released a press statement saying his action “potentially saved Members and staff from serious injury and possible death”.

        Potentially, possible.

The original video I saw, from Byrd’s side of the door, was unequivocal.

“Babbitt, hoisted by two men, began to climb through the shattered window. …Babbitt had been warned not to proceed through the window: one witness recalled that “A number of police and Secret Service were saying ‘Get back! Get down! Get out of the way!’; [Babbitt] didn’t heed the call.”

All while Trump was watching from his dining room.

        Bon appétit.

You sound like one of my sisters.

      4. Basically surrounded by cops with a knife in her pocket and she is so dangerous she should be shot?

Capitol police of course defend one another. Makes sense to me.

Biden’s Justice Dept. I trust like you trust Trump’s. Yes, Trump’s actions were despicable.

What’s funny is how Biden’s Justice Department went after cops especially ones involved in shootings. Inject race and it was almost guaranteed.

Good for your sisters for not accepting the usual baloney about this aspect of that sad day. Suicides are not murder and a rioter surrounded by armed personnel seems like they could have subdued her.

How many rioters shot and killed in the summer 2020?

Could not agree with you more! Of course we could find other presidents’ who have issues–but Trump beats them all hands down.

look to election in Canada for what happens when you insult the whole country–down went the Conservatives (were sure to win prior to Trump) and up went the Liberals.

    1. True, behavior by some past Presidents was bad , they all had flaws. Jackson, Johnson and Nixon stand out, but nothing like what we see now on full display, nothing so obvious, so continuous for years… so ignored by so many who profess their values in supporting him.

With little exaggeration, every time I listen to him, read what he writes, there is gross misrepresentation or simply lies.
