Did you know requiring vaccinations is like “slavery.”

You can thank the MAGA mentality for this.

Exactly how will people make their own decisions, informed decisions in this environment of misleading and false information?

Florida will work to end all vaccine mandates in the state, including for schools, the state’s controversial Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo, MD, PhD, announced on Wednesday.

“People have a right to make their own decisions, informed decisions,” Ladapo said during a press conference with Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), likening the mandates to “slavery.”

Ladapo emphasized his view that the government does not have the right to determine what Floridians put in their bodies. He also referred to the mRNA COVID vaccines as “poison” and said many people wish they could undo their decision to get vaccinated with the life-saving shots.

The state Health Department, Ladapo said, can scrap its own rules for some vaccine mandates, but others would require action by the Florida Legislature. He did not specify any particular vaccines but repeated several times the effort would end “all of them. Every last one of them.”

In Florida, vaccine mandates for child day care facilities and public schools include shots for measles, chickenpox, hepatitis B, diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis, polio, and other diseases, according to the state Health Department’s website.

Florida would be the first state to eliminate so many vaccine mandates, Ladapo added.

In anticipation of pushback, he argued that there’s no ethical basis for herd immunity “to be used as a force to take away your ability to choose what you put in your body and what you as a parent put in your child’s body.”

This move contradicts public health consensus that vaccine mandates for daycare and school entry increase uptake and reduce the spread of infectious diseases.

“We can expect that measles will come roaring back,” Paul Offit, MD, director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, told the Washington Post. “Other infectious diseases will follow. This is an unprecedented move that will only put our children at unnecessary risk.”

Under DeSantis, Florida resisted imposing COVID vaccines on schoolchildren, requiring “passports” for places that draw crowds, school closures, and mandates that workers get the shots to keep their jobs.

DeSantis also announced on Wednesday the creation of a state-level “Make America Healthy Again” commission modeled after similar initiatives pushed at the federal level by HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

There are natural and prudent limits on individual freedoms in a society for the good of society – unless you live in a cave totally isolated from others.

Keep in mind:

During his time in the U.S. House of Representatives and as governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis has been a vocal opponent of the Affordable Care Act (ACA), often referred to as Obamacare.

While in Congress, he voted multiple times to repeal the law. He has also been a prominent critic of the ACA’s provisions as governor, notably by refusing to expand Medicaid in Florida, which has resulted in the state having one of the highest rates of uninsured residents in the country.

I hope no child suffers adverse consequences, but if they do, let it be only the children of the uninformed who are making America great. 🙏🏻

  1. As a Registered Nurse with a Master’s Degree as a Clinical Nurse Specialist, certification as a Nurse Case Manager and 43 years of Nursing experience (20 of which were spent working with children and families…I was first STUNNED by this announcement…which QUICKLY converted to OUTRAGE!

Absolutely unbelievable…and Florida’s “joke” of a Surgeon General ( in my personal opinion) says it should be up to parents what gets put into their children’s bodies…we are going back to the late 1950’s before most vaccines were developed, when local exposure became epidemic spreads of the disease killing and disabling children and non-vaccinated adults. Adults younger than 65 don’t even REMEMBER how many children died or were permanently disabled from measles and polio. I wonder if that means the insurance companies can refuse to pay for those parents of children who do want the immunizations, since they are no longer “mandated.”

These vaccines have been studied over and over for DECADES, and through PEER REVIEWED studies have been determined to be both SAFE and EFFECTIVE at either preventing the disease or (as in the case of Covid RNA vaccines) significantly lessening the SEVERITY of the disease, so as not to result in disability or death.

The INSANITY of the antivaxers ( once on the fringes of so call “alternative medicine”)…now has taken over MAINSTREAM MEDICINE!

I still believe we are living in the Superman comic’s BIZARRO WORLD (where everything there was the reverse of what our world was). Just insanity…and with the large number of family resorts in Florida…international or out of state visitors can be exposed here and take it back to their local communities and cause epidemics THERE!

It just boggles my mind the potential damaging RAMIFICATIONS of this PURELY POLITICAL policy going forward…history looking back will judge us as FOOL HARDY for ignoring PROVEN SCIENCE…in favor of unproven “fringe theories.”

  2. I fear our politicians are leading us down a dark and treacherous path;  they have no memory of these diseases that have been largely eradicated in our life times, and thus are going to reintroduce them with all the adverse consequences.  It defies rational reasoning. Just like you have written (and emailed me personally) about Social Security- that the politicians will not allow a 24% benefit cut in 7-8 years.  Even in your writings (and others I read), I sense a slight fear/concern that perhaps they will let it go down and bring about a huge benefit cut.  Some of my friends (I infer they are MAGA adherents) think by signing up early, they will avoid this benefit cut- but my take on it is that EVERYONE will suffer the cut.  I am afraid that this will happen and we will all suffer for a year before the citizenry rise up and vote them out of office to get this issue fixed.  So many millions of people will pay the price – regardless of whom they voted for. Thank you for all the factual information you provide and letting me know that there are some rational people still living in this country. Smith SmallwoodCharleston, SC

  3. Yikes. You accidentally left out an “n” in the last iteration of uninformed. Crazies will be accusing you of hating the children of our military.

  4. Before you go wishing ill on any child, just be aware that there are contraindications for certain infants and children concerning certain vaccines and likewise pregnant women and other people with certain conditions. Making everyone line up without consideration of mitigating circumstances is a totalitarian wish.

    1. First of all I did not wish ill on any child if you read what I wrote and second don’t be so uninformed as to not realize medical professionals and any regulations would and do take any contradictions into consideration as they always do.

Nobody is being lined up for shots or else.

The always has been to protect society as a whole.

      1. Your last sentence read to me as if evil comes let it fall on that other tribe. Be that as it may, you are correct that medical professionals do take into account extenuating circumstances for vaccination in most cases. However, after the COVID experience I do not feel comfortable that it would not be overrun in a panic situation. I saw proposals for “vaccine passports” and all manner of political proposals to rule people out of schools, supermarkets, public transportation and all manner of situations. All because they weren’t vaccinated and not once did I see anything about considering people who shouldn’t be vaccinated.

      2. You’re right, I said I did not wish bad consequences on any child, but if it happened let it be on the families supporting this craziness and not the innocent.

The last time I was lined up for vaccines was in school for polio shots and sugar cubes and in the army. I was glad for both.

As I have said before, when you live in a society there are natural limits on individual freedom for the common good.

I would like to drive my car down the highway at 90 miles an hour, but common sense says that is dangerous to me and others so we impose speed limits (and still there are those who ignore them with bad consequences – hopefully not involving innocent people).

try to stay away from the crazy talk when you suggest if folks die from lack of vaccination that it be those who do not support your point of view , as you call them the “uninformed”. I know during COVID there were those who said medical treatment should be denied to those not vaccinated–I was one of the very early vaccinated and had my three or four if I am correct–I’m a big believer in vaccines, but realize there are others who view them differently.

Personally no child should be able to cross the threshold of a public school without vaccinations for mumps, measles , and rubella as well as DPT and maybe even polio. Maybe Florida wants to stop your folks from heading south so they are proposing this foolish law.

Stay away from crazy –let the loons on the left and Trump occupy that position–there is plenty of ammunition out there for grist.
