The Trump conundrum

When I see, or hear or observe Donald Trump I am deeply disturbed by his behavior, by his lying, bullying, name calling. His ignorance on important subjects is obvious, his arrogance and his obsession with power, control and self- grandiosity is clear.

I think to myself, how can any rational, intelligent person put their future in the hands of such a person.

However, to his supporters, Donald Trump’s personality is not a flaw to be overlooked, but a vital asset. His defiance represents their own desire to stand up to the status quo, his bluntness is seen as honesty, and his aggressive style is viewed as the protective shield of a leader fighting on their behalf.

They have been duped, he has played on their fears, their prejudices, their lack of information and understanding on important issues. This is what all demagogues do.

The really sad thing is he has done nothing to make the lives of Americans better and he has done nothing to improve the long-term standing or economic condition of the United States. And, he has created global chaos and hardship and put us at greater risk.

He is not fighting on anyone’s behalf except his own and in the process has increased his net worth by billions.

He has ignored addressing the significant issues facing Social Security and Medicare, he has promised a great new health plan for years, he has ignored that tariffs are a tax on consumers, etc. etc. He did not eliminate inflation or the deficit as promised, he did the opposite.

I have no illusions that MAGA adherents will change their minds because they see themselves as victims and people in that frame of mind are always vulnerable to any cult movement.
