The lazy people Cliché

The facts are quite the different, but the above persists as the common myth. Is it reasonable to think that a significant number of people just getting by on any type of public assistance enjoy that existence/lifestyle simply because they are “lazy?”

SNAP A recent USDA report, summarized by FRAC in June 2025, found that 39 percent of participants were children, 20 percent were older adults, and 10 percent were individuals with disabilities. frac

Other program estimates.

  • TANF (cash welfare): about three-quarters of recipients are children, since most cases are “child-only” or single parents with kids.
  • Medicaid/CHIP: roughly 35-40% of enrollees are children, though they account for a much smaller share of spending.
  • WIC: most participants are infants and children under 5, with the rest being pregnant, postpartum, or breastfeeding women.
  • School meals (NSLP/SBP): essentially 100%, by design.
  • Federal housing assistance: a lower share, around a third, because many recipients are elderly or disabled adults.

These figures shift year to year and depend on whether a source counts people or households.

Roughly 15–17% of federal spending goes to means-tested assistance programs and that includes the earned income tax credit and the children tax credit. The great majority of so-called welfare is Medicaid and CHIP providing health care, not handouts.

All from Democrats

As a reference, about 36–37% of federal spending goes to Social Security and Medicare combined. While virtually all workers contribute directly to these programs, the majority receive far more in benefits than the value of their contributions and by design millions of spouses and children collect a benefit without ever contributing themselves. Yup, you can thank democratic administrations for these programs.

About those hard working Americans, there are some, and many jobs require physical exertion, some are dangerous, but after fifty years in the workforce I can attest that just because a person has a job and shows up each day does not make them hard working or even competent. It makes the majority quite average, a C, acceptable performers.
