But what does it add up to? Well, in many cases of “average” Americans it adds up to not saving for the future. The average American has less than $1,000 in savings and $34 in their pocket. But why? The easy answer is they have insufficient income, the actual answer may be on the other side.

The average American home is the second largest in the world.
The largest selling vehicles in the US are pickup trucks and SUVs
81% of Americans own a smartphone, including 71% of those earning under $30,000 a year (but 95% have a cell phone).
The average American spends $1,000 a year on lotteries with the biggest spenders between age 65 and 74.
There are an average 2.5 televisions per household. A whopping 31% of households have more than 4 television sets. And that’s a decrease from previous years.
The average person spends around $1,200 on vacation per year. For a family of 4, this means around $4,800. This can equal as much as 8-9% of the average household income.
On average, dog owners spend $1,285 a year on their pet, while cat owners spend $915 a year.
Etc., etc., etc., etc.
The facts presented here are further reminders that those living in the U.S. are economically in the top 2 or 3 per cent of all human beings who have ever lived. (Ok, I discount extra-terrestrials, should there be any.)
And yet….
Our most difficult problems are not economic or material. In thinking they are, we ignore the wisdom of those who came before us who were poor by our material stadards, but wealthy in the most important things.
