Going back to work

Sadly Giving Up On Retirement And Going Back To Work

Published: 04/03/2023 by  135 Comments

After doing a deep dive on the different ways to pay for collegeand how to get good financial aid, I realized the best thing for my family is for me to go back to work. Coming up with $1,500,000 for two kids’ college experience in 12-15 years is daunting.

Going back to work feels like giving up since I helped kickstart the FIRE movement in 2009. But the reality is, times are always changing.

It would be rather crass to say I told you so, but I did. The FIRE movement is and has always been a farce. FIRE folks either live so frugally it would be unappealing to most people, are not truly retired and/or have not encountered the vicissitudes of life including a volatile stock market. I have to give this guy credit for being honest.

  1. Hi – I had commented earlier that this was an April Fool’s joke. My mistake – I skimmed over the next paragraph… From the financial samurai post… OK, this is my belated April Fool’s Day post because I forgot to write one on Saturday! My mind is mostly focused on the kids during the weekends.

I’m still waiting to hear back from the Warriors, but everything I’ve written in this post is true. Ideally, I land a job with them, but there are no guarantees.

I need to find a way to get out of the house more often. For six years, so much of my life has evolved around raising young kids. Now that both are in school, I need a new purpose.

Last year, I was invited to a players and coaches event with the Warriors and it was exhilarating. It felt wonderful to be a part of a team, especially one that has won for so long. I miss the camaraderie.  So he is trying to go back to work.  You have my blessing if you want to rag on him again… Sorry about that. Nancy Wilkins
