President Trump on Monday signed orders to impose a 50 percent tariff on a wide range of Canadian goods, claiming that Canada had discriminated against the United States in key industries.
Administration officials said the taxes were punishment for Canadian discrimination against three U.S. industries: motor vehicles, dairy and alcohol.
Mr. Trump has angered Canadians by suggesting he will annex Canada as the 51st state. He recently threatened to impose tariffs on Canada after wildfire smoke engulfed parts of Northeastern and Midwestern United States, accusing Canada of mismanaging its forest sector. In October, Mr. Trump said he would cut off trade talks with the country, after a Canadian province ran an ad quoting former President Ronald Reagan criticizing tariffs.

Trump has openly and repeatedly claimed to be a great, even the greatest, negotiator/dealmaker — it’s a core part of his self-branding going back to The Art of the Deal — while many negotiation scholars and journalists have pushed back hard on whether the record supports it.
QUINNSCOMMENTARY 
And last night’s speech at the White House Correspondents dinner was another example of his mean-spiritedness. I often watch his entire speeches live so I can form my own opinion before reading those of others, but last night I gave up after only a few minutes. Apparently he went on for about an hour, well beyond the allotted 20 minutes. Never, ever a thought for others, like when he manages to distract attention and resources to himself during sporting events that he attends. The only game the Knicks lost was the one he attended.

From what I have read elsewhere there is some method behind the madness and sufficient reason to bring Canada to the table. In the areas of auto imports, liquor and milk for example, Canada has played unfair with US exports. Trump is brash among other shortcomings but sometimes does things for right reasons.
