Warning signs? You be the judge.

Does any of this apply anywhere you may be familiar with?

Some warning signs to look for:

  • Extreme nationalism: The nation is portrayed as uniquely virtuous or under existential threat, often with minorities or foreigners blamed for decline.
  • Leader worship: A leader is presented as the only person who can “save” the country, and loyalty to the leader becomes more important than institutions or laws.
  • Scapegoating: A particular ethnic, religious, immigrant, political, or social group is blamed for economic or cultural problems.
  • “Us vs. them” politics: Opponents aren’t treated as legitimate fellow citizens but as enemies, traitors, or contaminants.
  • Rejection of democratic constraints: Courts, elections, legislatures, journalists, civil servants, or constitutional limits are attacked when they constrain the movement.
  • Political violence or intimidation: Violence by supporters is excused, celebrated, or portrayed as necessary to defeat internal enemies.
  • Attacks on independent media: Journalism is systematically characterized as an enemy or propaganda, while the movement promotes its own information ecosystem.
  • Suppression of opposition: Protesters, opposition parties, academics, activists, or civil-society organizations are threatened or restricted.
  • Militarization and glorification of force: Military strength, discipline, obedience, and violence are portrayed as virtues in themselves.
  • A mythic national restoration: Politics is framed as restoring a supposedly glorious past—often with the claim that the nation has been humiliated or “stolen” from its rightful people.
  • Contempt for pluralism: Diversity of beliefs and interests is treated as weakness; the country is supposed to speak with one unified political will.
  • Propaganda over truth: Emotional narratives, conspiracy theories, and repeated slogans become more important than evidence or factual consistency.

Many people seem to be welcoming this, even rushing toward it. 😢
